“I almost wish I hadn’t gone down that rabbit-hole—and yet—and yet—it’s rather curious, you know, this sort of life!” — Alice, in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Play
Play is a paradox. The best play is challenging, like riding a bicycle up a steep hill, then coasting down as fast as you dare, the pull of gravity canceling effort. Play is anything that takes me out of time and into a timeless flow. Sometimes it takes a while to get there. I play musical instruments—mainly bass clarinet and violin, and a few others. In the work of practicing I climb to the crest, then coast into the flow of play.
Following my curiosity, going down the rabbit-holes, is play. My favorite form of play is writing. I write to discover myself, how I think about things, and how I process the world and my place in it.
